Imperial prince Alex dies by his brother Cassius's hand at his own coronation, only to awaken at the sacred mate-selection ceremony of his past. He rejects the noblewoman Livia and claims Elena, a destitute flower seller, surrendering his royal rank for a life of modest warmth. Cassius refuses to relent, framing Elena's keepsake as stolen property and forcing Alex into the burning divine trial of the steps to prove her innocence. As execution looms, Elena unveils her true nature as Athena, goddess of war, yet divine law forbids their union. Alex must now confront the obsessions of his former life to stand beside her, even as a darker threat gathers unseen.
