Elena devoted three years to vampire James, certain their bond was genuine, until the night of her turning ceremony shattered everything. His long-dead first love, Vicky, returned wearing Elena's exact face, and James immediately abandoned his wife for the original. The interrupted ritual ignited a magical fire in Elena's veins, condemning her to die within seven days. Recognizing she had only ever been a placeholder, she signed the divorce papers without protest, removed her ruby ring, and walked away down the palace steps, leaving James to his belated regrets.
